Think & Grow Rich – Chapter 9

Persistence: The Sustained Effort Necessary to Induce Faith

Sometimes, I’m on a mission at home of one kind or another and my husband will say, “Are you still doing that?”  I'm not sure if that is a positive or negative comment.  The following thoughts in this chapter stood out to me and made one thing clear to me about that. I will shareit  at the end of my lesson.

Hill shares principles which must be understood & developed.  Though each principle must be enhanced during our lives for success, it must be applied with PERSISTENCE  if we desire to accumulate money.

The ease with which lack of persistence may be conquered will depend entirely upon the INTENSITY OF ONE’S DESIRE. If you find yourself lacking in persistence, this weakness may be remedied by building a stronger fire under your desires.

Hill makes a huge claim when he states, “Without PERSISTENCE, you will be defeated, even before you start. With PERSISTENCE you will win.”

“Hill states, “POVERTY CONSCIOUSNESS WILL VOLUNTARILY SEIZE THE MIND WHICH IS NOT OCCUPIED WITH THE MONEY CONSCIOUSNESS.”  He assumes that the mind MUST ALWAYS be occupied.  “A poverty consciousness develops without conscious application of habits favorable to it. The money consciousness must be created to order, unless one is born with such a consciousness.”  YEAH…he gives a BIG Clue.  Our consciousness is developed or changed by our habits.  A big part of having the life we want happens by acquiring NEW HABITS.

“Some men who have accumulated great fortunes, did so because of NECESSITY. They developed the habit of PERSISTENCE, because they were so closely driven by circumstances that they had to become persistent.”  When this happens, we usually recognize later what a blessing that necessity was to us.

Persistence is a state of mind, therefore it can be cultivated.  Like all states of mind, persistence is based upon definite causes, among them these—

Definiteness of Purpose, Desire, Self-Reliance, Co-operation, Will Power & Habit.  Strengthening each of these 1 by 1, can increase our level of persistence. How to develop each state of mind is taught in one or more chapters of this book.

There are weaknesses which must be mastered by all who accumulate riches. Hill gives a list of 16, Go ahead…take your “persistence temperature,” by checking which symptoms plague you.  Then work on at them one at a time.

OR….Go right to the 4 steps Hill gives us to develop persistence.

  1. A DEFINITE PURPOSE BACKED BY BURNING DESIRE FOR ITS FULFILLMENT

  2.   A DEFINITE PLAN EXPRESSED IN CONTINUOUS ACTION.

  3.   A MIND CLOSED TIGHTLY AGAINST ALL NEGATIVE AND DISCORUAGING INFLUENCES.

  4.  A FRIENDLY ALLIANCE WITH ONE OR MORE PERSONS WHO WILL ENCOUAGE ONE TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH BOTH PLAN AND PURPOSE.

If that’s too much for you, go back to the previous lists of states of mind and break it down for your particular life experiences.  They ponderously look at the lists of 1) the list of definite causes upon the basis by which persistence is developed, and 2) the symptoms of lack of persistence

I loved the vision of Kate Smith tromping up and down Broadway, singing at first for free, not even asking for payment & then with persistence, getting to the level that her 1 week paycheck was a year’s pay to the average person.

Another persistent person I love is Walt Disney.  He has entertained children all over the world for nearly a century and created a billion-dollar merchandising empire. Mr. Disney was fired from his first job at the Kansas City Star because “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” In an ironic turn of events years later the Walt Disney Company acquired the Kansas City Star with the purchase of parent company ABC.  That was of particular interest to me as my wedding announcement was in that paper over 53 years ago.

So …about my wedding and my husband.  The next time he notices me continuing a task to the end and says, “Are you STILL doing that?”  I will not bat an eye.  I’ll thank him for the compliment!

Thanks to Linda and Michael Dlouhy for this wonderful place to learn how to think and to all who are here learning how to think for themselves.  You are so appreciated!
