CHAPTER 4 AUTO-SUGGESTION
Hill attaches prime importance to auto-suggestion.
Auto-suggestion is the use of self-talk to embed ideas in the subconscious mind.
Why do we need to do this?
Unfortunately the "default setting" of the human mind is negative. By it's very nature it's more likely to think of negative thoughts than positive ones. And these negative thoughts can cause real problems. They can and often do sabotage our plans and prevent us from achieving our goals
We need to drive out the negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones.
A problem that I've come across is actually recognising that Im having negative thoughts. Often I don't realise that I'm having them until they're already well entrenched, and then I'm half-way down the slippery slope to depression.
Each of us needs to develop a routine of self-talk designed to maintain a positive mental attitude. We need to repeat it over and over again. That way we can be prepared when adverse events occur. If you're already half-way down the slope to depression an unfortunate event can push you the rest of the way.
Now there is another reason for maintaining a positive mental attitude.
Hill believed in what these days is called the Law of Attraction. The thoughts you have in your mind will attract the same sort of events into your life. Positive thoughts will attract positive events and negative thoughts will attract negative ones. If, for example you are constantly thinking about how little money you have, you will attract financial and indeed other forms of scarcity into your life
Life doesn;t happen to you, Life follows you.
By controlling your thoughts you can control your life.
