Chapter 2: Desire
In this chapter, Napoleon Hill points out the necessity of having a BURNING DESIRE in order to bring into reality the dream that literally fuels our existence. It reminds me of the story of Daniel (Rudy) Ruttieger, a 5’6”, 165-pound young man who had a BURNING DESIRE to play football for Notre Dame. Because of his Dyslexia he had a hard time scholastically and went from high school to the Navy for two years, then to work in a power plant for two years. He applied to Notre Dame and was not accepted because of poor grades so he enrolled nearby at Holy Cross College for two years. It was there at Holy Cross where he discovered he had Dyslexia.
Rudy’s dream was to play for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team, but was only accepted as a scout-team player, the practice squad that helps the varsity team practice for games. By his senior year Rudy’s dream of dressing for a game had not been realized. Dan Devine came up with the idea to have him dress for the last game and Rudy, his dream finally coming to fruition, did not disappoint. He played for three plays. The first was a kickoff, the second was an incomplete pass, and on the third (and final) play he sacked Rudy Allen, the opposing team’s quarterback and was carried off the field by his teammates after the game; being the first of only two in the history of Notre Dame who were carried off the field by their teammates.
Rudy’s BURNING DESIRE may not be like yours or mine, but it isn’t supposed to be. I believe each one is uniquely given by God and has an intensity that drives us on a path that others may not understand. They are often things that have never been thought of before; as in Henry Ford building the V8 engine or Edwin C. Barnes KNOWING that he would introduce himself to Edison and would become his business partner. We also know there are only a select few with whom we can share what is driving us who will not try and talk us out of it or think we’re crazy.
The world needs people who carry BURNING DESIRES in every genre. New inventions are created which means more jobs, lives are enhanced and made easier, and the economy is healthier. We must be careful not to allow lapse of time, disappointment, or the crushing “No’s” to allow our BURNING DESIRE to become a flickering flame. But it is also critical to know when it needs to be refined or repurposed (as with Edwin C. Barnes and the Insurance Industry). It Is important to know who your team is; (for example Napolean Hill and his wife regarding their son, certain family members and/or friends, and this Mastermind group). These are the people who will stoke and not douse the fires of our dreams, who will pray for and support us, who will cheer us on, and give wise counsel when needed.
I’ve known since I was a young child that my path was not to be a mirror image of the majority of my family members. And, I suspect that many in this group are the same way. As I use this time in my life to stoke and rekindle the flames of my BURNING DESIRE, it will become clear whether it means refining or repurposing my flame much like Barnes. At any rate, thank you guys for a safe place to do it.
