The Fifth Step Toward Riches…

My adopted Dad always encouraged me & kept telling me what a great imagination I have…  I grew proud of that idea… I had been told by many people that I should take up writing because, even with no formal training, it seems I have a gift for it…

My late husband was a former Navy Seal who had spent 37 months serving in Vietnam…  He told me about some of his experiences he'd had when he was there & I listened…

About six months after we got together I needed to take my car to be repaired…  When I got to the dealer I was told to go to the waiting room until I was called…  I told them since it was such a beautiful day, I would be at the back of the lot with my lawn chair, a writing pad & a lap table…  I wanted to write about Billy’s service to our country… It was there I learned of Divine Guidance because ‘til then it was just an idea I’d had…  As soon as I sat down the words just began to flow… It was like I had no clue where they were coming from & I had to try to slow them down because they were running through my mind so fast…  They came to me in poetic form which really surprised me because I had absolutely no experience with poetry… About an hour & a half later I heard my name over the speaker from the office…  My car was finished & I had just finished my project…

When I took it home & showed Billy, he was so pleased he suggested I get it copyrighted, so off to the library I went to find out what I needed to do to make that happen…  It was published by The St. Pete Times & I had it copyrighted… I got so much positive feedback about it, I had 3,000 copies printed on 11x17 gold paper with the print in red & green, the colors of the Vietnam Flag…

The following year in May I met a soldier from the Gulf war…  I left him read a copy of the poem… He asked me if I had some extra copies he could take with him that morning because he was headed to Washington, D.C. to ride with Rolling Thunder for the huge Memorial Day Tribute to the MIAs & the Vietnam Vets who made the ultimate sacrifice…  I think I gave him about 50 copies… He told me he would see to it that one was installed in The Smithsonian Institute… Because I’d had it published before I had it copyrighted, two copies were put in The Library of Congress… When I went to northern Florida to visit my son, we stopped at the Naval Base in Pensacola…  I left a copy at the front desk… Later that week I got a wonderful letter from the curator of the museum thanking me for my contribution… He told me he would see that it got put on display in the section for the Vietnam Veterans in The National Naval Museum at The Pensacola Naval Air Station… I was asked to recite it three years in a row at the National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida when the Moving Wall would be there…

I feel so blessed that God gave me this gift of imagination, because it’s something I really enjoy, especially when writing… This is one of the reasons Gratitude is my favorite subject… I feel I’ve really improved on my 10th grade education…
