There may be no heroic connotation to the word “persistence,” but the quality is to the character of man what carbon is to steel.
I have two examples of persistence that I would like to share. The first has to deal with sports, specifically football but it applies to all sports. Most people know that I am a big Bama fan. I know that Michael says he does not put much time in football and I respect that. I love college football for the sport but I also love it because of the life lessons that it teaches me. Harv Eker says the same thing about sports. He says that he doesn't watch much television but when he does it’s sports because of that very reason.
I find that the people who spend all of their younger years preparing to get to the NFL work hard, put football first and do everything that they can to get better. So that is the skill alone that most people don't have but the thing that they are missing I find is the mindset to keep the money once they make it. Michael talks about this a lot, it does not of good to make it if you can't keep it.
I pull for the Bama players while they're in college to make it big in the NFL. It is very exciting to see them make big plays and do well when they get there but it's also very disappointing when I see them make stupid mistakes and get into domestic violence, drugs, and so many other things that waste everything that they worked for. All because their minds were not prepared to receive it.
We had a starting quarterback named Jalen Hurts who took us to 2 national championships. He was able to do that because of his athleticism and the the ability to run the ball but his passing skills were not good at all and he was replaced in the national championship last year by a freshman who won the game for us. In the coming season he was demoted to the second string quarterback and at that point is where most quarterbacks that get replaced end up transferring to another school.
Jalen did not do that. He is a person of excellent character and decided to stay and help the team for the season in any role that he could. The first string quarterback was so good that he was finished playing by the fourth quarter, sometimes the halftime when we have run the score up to 50 points or more ahead of the opponent.
Towards the end of the season Tua, the starting quarterback got hurt and by the SEC championship was ineffective because of his injury and had to be carted off. We were a couple of touchdowns behind to Georgia and Jalen came in and helped win the game in the same fashion as the freshman quarterback did last year. Jalen's persistence in sticking with the team helped them and also helped him. You see he had become a much better passer because of the quarterback coach that we have in Dan Enos.
The second example is about me and I don't say this to boast in any way. You see in the past I would give up at the first sign of adversity. Things changed as I begin to study personal development. Amy said that I was the most persistent person she met because of my experience with her so I have obviously changed to my benefit and really took that as a compliment know how I weak I was in persistence in the past.
Napoleon hill says that the starting point of all achievement is desire and also says that weak desires bring weak results. When I was dating online I always felt that I had to get three things out of the way before we could go any farther and those things were...
Do you smoke?
Are you a liberal?
Do you like motorcycles?
I felt that I could not have the kind of relationship I wanted unless those questions were answered. With them answered I immediately fell in love with Amy and my desire to please her and be with her was so strong that it made it easy to be persistent through all the obstacles that we would come to face. And so I have come to the conclusion that the intensity of desire is everything!
