Lesson II

Like all states of mind, persistence is based upon definite causes, among them these:—

a. DEFINITENESS OF PURPOSE –Know what you want

b. DESIRE –Keep Your Eye on Your Why

c. SELF-RELIANCE (Note: Your momma isn’t going to do it for you)

d. DEFINITENESS OF PLANS –I always think of a cake here… if you have even a bad recipe, it will lead to a good one if you keep working it. Consider Edison and his light bulb or Ford and his one block eight cylinder engine. You may not get it the first shot, but a plan reworked is still a plan.

e. ACCURATE KNOWLEDGE –creating a sound plan, research, etc, encourages persistence. In fact, it gives hope, reinforces hope. And hope is a powerful thing.

f. CO-OPERATION –involving others who have likeminded goals reinforces persistence (IE: like this group)

g. WILL-POWER –focusing on the plan and not distractions

h. HABIT –see Charles Duhigg, the absolute best on the knowledge of habit

“Don’t aim so high, people will think you are crazy.” – You don’t stand out in a crowd if you are just like the crowd.

The time to nurse an idea is at the time of its birth. Every minute it lives, gives it a better chance of surviving. (the joy of taking an idea and turning it into a white hot burning desire)

Eddie Cantor lost his money in the 1929 stock crash, but he still had his PERSISTENCE and his courage. With these, plus two prominent eyes, he exploited himself back into an income of $10,000 a week! In today’s times (well, actually in 2017), his $10,000 a week then is the equivalent to almost $150,000 a week now.

The only “break” anyone can afford to rely upon is a self-made “break.”

1. A definite purpose backed by burning desire for its fulfillment. Obsessed for its success. A laser focus… where quitting is not an option. If you fall down, fall on your back, that way you’re looking up.

2. A definite plan, expressed in continuous action. Continuous action is necessary, as it keeps you focused on the plan and away from distractions.

3. A mind closed tightly against all negative and discouraging influences, including negative suggestions of relatives, friends and acquaintances. Positive seeds have a strong influence. So do negative ones. Put way more positive ones in than negative ones. That’s why positive self talk, motivational audios, including you being your best cheerleader, are important. I have audios of me encouraging me. Sounds weird, but it works.

4. A friendly alliance with one or more people who will encourage you to follow through with both plan and purpose. A mastermind might be the place for a source for that. Lookie here, this is a mastermind :-)

These are the four steps which guarantee favorable “breaks.” – this is a bold statement. I suggest put it into action…

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent” - Calvin Coolidge

“If you can’t fly, then run, if you can’t run, then walk and if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.” – Bill Bradley

I want to close this lesson on this idea: sometimes persistence inspires faith. And sometimes faith inspires persistence. I look at each as a wing on a plane. You have to have both to really make it work. One supports the other and encourages the other. And what I like about persistence is that it is a decision. You don’t have to have anything more than that. You don’t have to pay for it with your credit card. There’s no needed permission from family and friends. It’s all on you. It’s your choice. And what’s even cooler is that faith is a choice. You don’t have to borrow faith from a preacher. It’s from within and you choose to have it. You can choose both wings of this magnificent plane. The opposite choices are also there, but I would suggest to fly when you move forward.

P.S. Thanks to everyone, Bob, Michael, Nathan, Taquittee, Nick, Rick, Marty, Loray, Lawrence, and everyone else who participates in this mastermind. With your help, I grow in the right direction. I will mess up from time to time, and I will even stumble. People will think I'm such a mess, like I'm a box of cereal scattered all over the floor. I thank you all for being here in this journey as I work to clean up this mess.
