Chapter 9 Persistence
PERSISTENCE: THE SUSTAINED EFFORT NECESSARY TO INDUCE FAITH
The Eighth Step toward Riches
”Energy and persistence conquer all things. Benjamin Franklin
In the opening sentences of this chapter Hill states the following, “PERSISTENCE is an essential factor in the procedure of transmuting DESIRE into its monetary equivalent. The basis of persistence is the POWER OF WILL”. Benjamin Franklin’s quote above really focuses on the fact that “Will Power” is the energy necessary to ensures the attitude of persistence.
Looking back at the previous chapters it is easy to see that persistence runs through them all. Without persistence to achieve his Desire, Barnes would never have presented himself in Edison’s Office. Ford would never have achieved his one cast engine block.
Hill further goes on to state, “Will-power (Emotional Energy) and desire, when properly combined, make an irresistible pair. Men who accumulate great fortunes are generally known as cold-blooded, and sometimes ruthless. Often they are misunderstood. What they have is willpower, which they mix with persistence, and place back of their desires to insure the attainment of their objectives”. The majority of people give up on dreams and ideas at the first “Road Block” or sign of failure; they lack the ‘Will Power” to keep looking for a solution that will move them forward.
Hill again states, “Henry Ford has been generally misunderstood to be ruthless and coldblooded. This misconception grew out of Ford’s habit of following through in all of his plans with “persistence”.
Hill also gives us the list of the definite causes of persistence which must be present to ensure its achievement, eight in all. I found it interesting that when he lists the “Symptoms of Lack of Persistence there are sixteen.
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent”
Hill’s example of Fannie Hurst determination to conquer Broadway, the graveyard of many talented people, is an example of what Calvin Coolidge is talking about. Fannie had writing talent, like many other writers, but she didn’t give up at the “First No”, she pounded the Broadway Streets for four years before she received a “Yes”. She had conquered Broadway because she was “Persistent”.
“Patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success”. Napoleon Hill
Ambition is the path to success; persistence is the vehicle you arrive in. William Eardley
Hill further states that “POVERTY is attracted to the one whose mind is favourable to it, as money is attracted to him whose mind has been deliberately prepared to attract it, and through the same laws. POVERTY CONSCIOUSNESS WILL VOLUNTARILY SEIZE THE MIND WHICH IS NOT OCCUPIED WITH THE MONEY CONSCIOUSNESS. A poverty consciousness develops without conscious application of habits favourable to it. The money consciousness must be created to order, unless one is born with such a consciousness”.
It can be concluded that if we follow the steps step out in this book then we will achieve our ultimate goal. Chapter two and the steps included therein are crucial to success as is our self talk said many times per day. “How we do anything is how we do everything”, along with learning to ‘how to think as against what to think”.
