                                                                                                             Desire

“He saw himself standing in Edison’s presence. He heard himself asking Mr Edison for an opportunity to carry out the one consuming obsession of his life, a burning desire to become the business associate of the great inventor.” Barnes could actually see and hear himself taking the action needed to achieve his goal because he had complete faith in his ability to realize his goal. It wasn’t a wish or, an ‘I’ll try this or that’ or, ‘I’ll do my best’; he had burned all the bridges behind him and it was ‘do or die’.

“Wishing will not bring riches. But desiring riches with a state of mind that becomes an obsession, then planning definite ways and means to acquire riches and backing those plans with persistence which does not recognize failure, will bring riches”. There are two ways to acquire faith in your ability to achieve a life’s purpose: If you believe in God, you can summon His divine help to aid you when stating your life’s purpose and, when saying the self-talk based on it. Otherwise, you can build up your own self-confidence, relying on your faith in your own powers.

The ‘Six Steps that Turn Desire into Gold’ are a neat summation of what a life’s purpose should contain. There is a definite goal, a time limit for its acquisition, what you intend to give in return, a description of your plan and the necessity to read it twice daily, while feeling and believing yourself already in possession of your desire.

Hill is not just talking about money for its own sake in this chapter. You must go beyond money and ask yourself ‘What value, in terms of a lifelong legacy, do I want to leave for successive generations of the human family?’ Why do I want this money, and to what use am I going to put it ? He says: “If the thing you wish to do is right, and you believe in it, go ahead and do it”. Of the poet, Robert Burns, he says: “The world was made better for his having lived…”

I believe if I repeat my life’s purpose morning and evening with full confidence that God, Whom I believe in with all my heart, will give me unshakeable faith in my own power to achieve my life goals. I must also infuse my self-talk with the same belief and confidence.
