Colleen Toye Mandeville, Louisiana, USA
I have wanted to be an artist as long as I can remember.
As a child, I drew on everything, painting on anything, even seashells that I collected in the Gulf of Mexico when I visited my older sister in Tampa, Florida during the winter when we lived in Minnesota.
I have had a business off and on for the past 35 years creating handmade Christmas ornaments for about 40 stores throughout Louisiana, but I never thought of myself as an artist.
This past April, I was with an artist friend and I mentioned to her that I would love to paint on canvas, but that the blank canvas scared me to death.
She said "we can take care of that". "Come over to my house and I will help you conquer your fear".
Over the past 4 months, my friend has taught me that there is something in me that I felt was there, but my fear always told me that I only made Christmas ornaments out of clay.
Since then, I have sold one of my paintings and another one is going out this week.
Thanks to my friend, Pam, I have conquered my fear of a blank canvas and I feel great!
Here's to all of those who believe in those of us who have doubts about ourselves.
