Chapter 14 – The Sixth Sense
“The SIXTH SENSE is that portion of the subconscious mind which has been referred to as the Creative Imagination. It has also been referred to as the “receiving set” through which ideas, plans, and thoughts flash into the mind. The “flashes” are sometimes called “hunches” or “inspirations.””
As I read this chapter, I was reminded of the times in my life where I had a hunch or an inspiration. Sometimes I followed those hunches and things turned out well. There were other times however, that I didn’t pay attention and suffered the consequences.
I clearly remember one time when I listened to my hunch. I was living in Duluth, MN and had traveled four hours to visit my parents in Antigo, WI for the weekend. On Sunday morning, I had a hunch to get on the road early. My family wanted me to stay for lunch and of course, I wanted to stay too. But this “niggling feeling” would not leave me. So, I opted to pack my car and get on the road. As I was driving, the sky was getting darker and darker around me. I could see clearer sky ahead, so I kept going. I finally got to Hwy 53 and was only an hour away from Duluth when my Mom called me. She told me that a tornado touched down on Highway 8 and demolished everything in its path. A portion of Highway 8 was shut down because of the debris. I had just driven through there only a half an hour before!
Hill states, “Through the aid of the sixth sense, you will be warned of impending dangers in time to avoid them, and notified of opportunities in time to embrace them.” Clearly, my hunch saved me from impending danger. By leaving early, I missed the tornado. That portion of the highway was shut down for over 24 hours!
As I read Hill’s account of his nightly meetings, I felt excited. What started for him as an endeavor to build his character, turned into something so much more. How often do we tend to look at someone and think, I would like to be more like that individual? The thing is, it is not the individual so much as it is the character we want to imitate or acquire.
One of my biggest flaws is the fear of knowing what to say to people. I am excellent one-on-one with people. But get me in a crowd and I become silent. Ironically, I can speak in front of a crowd or do a training, but I am in control in those situations. As I started Mentoring For Free, I found myself afraid to make my calls. This is extremely frustrating for me! We all know that fear should have no place in our lives and I am determined to conquer this one.
Hill states that the six ghosts of fear are nothing but ghosts because they exist only in one’s mind. I am going to use Hill’s example of nightly meetings with individuals such as Michael Dlouhy and my mentor John Wiser who have the ability to talk to anyone without fear!
Thank you, Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this great Mastermind Group!
