Throughout this book Mr. Hill uses the great Henry Ford as an example of the lessons he is trying to Late in this chapter we read FORD SAID, “I’LL BELT THE EARTH WITH DEPENDABLE MOTOR CARS,” AND HE DID! (Although it took him a day or two and needed plenty of PERSISTENCE).
His decision to ignore his fears of failure and public opinion and to trust his own judgment instead, created a fortune far greater than the next five generations of his descendants can squander. Mr. Hill points out that practically the sole difference between Henry Ford and a majority of the more than one hundred thousand men who work for him, is this-FORD HAS A MIND AND CONTROLS IT, THE OTHERS HAVE MINDS WHICH THEY DO NOT TRY TO CONTROL.
Although admiring Ford, my personal favourite example of overcoming fear, taking control of his own mind and simply refusing to allow temporary failure to prevent him from fulfilling his personal destiny is Walt Disney; Certainly, he was afraid of failing and being made to look foolish in the eyes of not just family and friends but an entire population. Even though Bankrupted 5 times he was always driven by his vision of bringing joy to children all over the World. Disney stumbled many times, until the antics of a funny little mouse character appeared in a short cartoon called ‘Steamboat Willie’ set him on the road to fame and riches, again amassing a fortune big enough to provide financial security for generations to come.
Henry Ford has been repeatedly mentioned, because he is an astounding example of what a man with a mind of his own, and a will to control it, can accomplish. His record knocks the foundation from under that time-worn alibi, “I never had a chance.” On paper, Ford never had a chance, either, but he CREATED AN OPPORTUNITY AND BACKED IT WITH PERSISTENCE UNTIL IT MADE HIM RICHER THAN CROESUS.
I’m no expert on the Bible but, I love this quote from the book of Job “Thou shalt decree a thing and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon the ways.” This statement written thousands of years ago, I take as a clear statement that our minds and thoughts really do control our destiny.
Fear and doubt are devils cast into the minds of children, usually by well-meaning parents and adults who should know better, often out of a misplaced sense of protection from harm.
Some are mentally strong enough to throw off these attempts to shackle their minds from a very early age, some never do. It takes self-discipline and habit to control your own mind. You either control your mind or it controls you. There is no hall-way compromise. The most practical of all methods for controlling the mind and banishing fear from our thoughts is the habit of keeping it busy with a definite purpose, backed by a definite plan, surely an exact definition of why we need and how we use our daily self-talk, to fill our mind with those great ideas, then keep it busy focussing on providing the plan by repeatedly telling our mind what we want it to concentrate on. Without this control, success is not possible.
Like many readers of this forum, over the years I have read advertisements extolling the virtues of expensive courses ready to teach me how to find the ‘Master Key’ to success or how to master the ‘Key’ to the secrets of life and so on – Why would anyone even consider such a course when every key, every secret is contained in the chapters of Think and Grow Rich and we each get to learn the ‘way’ to achieving our personal success through the Mentoring for Free Mastermind Group.
With grateful thanks to Michael and Linda for not quitting on an idea and to every Coach, Contributor, and Reader for sharing their brilliance.
