Chapter 14 – The Sixth Sense
One afternoon I was driving with a friend on a freeway that goes through downtown Houston. On a Saturday afternoon, traffic was heavy, but flowing. All of a sudden a car swerved in front of us and the driver slammed on the brakes. In a split second I saw that nobody was in the lane next to me, and I quickly maneuvered to avoid a bad collision. My friend praised me for my driving abilities, yet I knew that something else was doing the driving in that moment. Napoleon Hill says: “Through the aid of the sixth sense, you will be warned of impending dangers in time to avoid them, and notified of opportunities in time to embrace them.” I didn’t have much of a warning of an impending car wreck, but I avoided it.
The second half of that quote is that we’ll be “notified of opportunities in time to embrace them.” We need to develop our sixth sense so that we’re aware of opportunities, and at the same time understand that the sixth sense, which is in touch with the Infinite Intelligence, is only a messenger. We need to act to take advantage of the opportunities. Have you heard of Joe Green? He was Mark Zuckerberg’s Harvard roommate who turned down the opportunity to join Mark in developing Facebook. Joe’s story is an extreme example, but how many opportunities have passed us by? Start working on your sixth sense to see opportunities and act on them.
