EARLY IN WHAT IS SURELY ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CHAPTERS in this amazing book we read - “Opinions are the cheapest commodities on earth. Everyone has a flock of opinions ready to be wished upon anyone who will accept them”.
Ignoring for the moment opinions expressed by those closest to us, let’s look at the results of professional ‘opinioneers’ (that’s not a real word, but it should be).
Not only did these professionals get the results of a recent little vote in the UK spectacularly wrong, many are still arguing they were right but the people got it wrong.
To make matters even worse, many of those same pundits repeated their mistake in calling the result of the recent US Presidential election utterly wrongly – and this from people paid to foist their opinions on us.
That millions on both sides of the pond might be even capable of expressing their own opinions seems to have completely escaped the attention of an entire army of people who felt they knew better.
It's for this same reason, advice from those who think they know what is best for us should be treated with extreme caution, truth is - only we know what is truly best for us, but it takes a clear mind and accurate information to make the decision. For myself, I find once the decision has been made, whether it eventually proves to be right or wrong, is a huge relief because I can move on rather than put up with the mental stagnation which comes from procrastination and indecision.
Hill continues by warning that “If you are influenced by “opinions” when you reach DECISIONS, you will not succeed in any undertaking, much less in that of transmuting YOUR OWN DESIRE into money”. “If the opinions of others influence you, you will have no DESIRE of your own. Keep your own counsel, when you begin to put into practice the principles described here, by reaching your own decisions and following them.
Take no one into your confidence, EXCEPT the members of your “Master Mind” group, and be very sure in your selection of this group, that you choose ONLY those who will be in COMPLETE SYMPATHY AND HARMONY WITH YOUR PURPOSE.
In the same way, it makes sense that if our car broke down, we would call a mechanic for repairs rather than a carpenter so it makes equal sense we seek advice from those who have walked the same path we wish to take in life, because they are the true professionals and their advice is to be prized and adapted to our own needs.
As members of Mentoring for Free we are all encouraged and shown how to learn how to think, not what to think and it is the understanding of the ‘how to’ which enables us to become the independent thinker’s life needs every true leader to be. Put bluntly – the world has plenty of sheep – what is desperately needed are a few more shepherds.
