Chapter 2-Desire

Desire is the 2nd step to acquiring riches after we have a thought about it.  We must have a desire with a state of mind that becomes an obsession.  With this desire we must have a definite purpose.  The single most challenging perspective presented in this chapter this time around stresses that you must burn your bridges.  This is what will make your desire have a definite purpose.  Mr. Barnes did exactly that when he hopped a freight train going to Orange, New Jersey to present himself before Mr. Edison.  He made it known to Mr. Edison that he would do whatever he wanted him to do just so he could one day become a partner with him, that is Mr. Edison, himself.

When we have a desire do we burn our bridges?  The first time I heard this expression was when a friend of mine said she was quitting her teaching job in Lynden, Washington and heading for Alaska.  She was leaving her family, that is her mother and father, and going with her husband to the last frontier.  She didn’t really know was ahead of her but she was excited and off she went.  About two years later my husband and I did the same thing.  It was not really the same thing though  because my husband had lived in Alaska and could not think of anything but to go back there.  We both had jobs waiting for us.

Since I have been in network marketing, burning bridges  has not entered into the picture as much.  I always knew that I had another income with my job so we would be able to get along without the extra income.  We wouldn’t be able to do what I wanted to do however.  Now that I have no children to take care of(they are all have families of their own) I have found that my desire has been hard to identify.  I have always lived to strive to make the world a better place but really didn’t realize that I didn’t have to leave where I was living to do this.  I have come to realize that I can start right here in my neighborhood.  The first thing on my agenda has to be to get acquainted with my neighbors.  As a result my husband and I are having a “get acquainted potluck.”  We plan to learn how these neighbors think about different issues in their life and maybe a project to improve their living situation will result.  Since I am using this phrase “burning bridges,” as my guide I will listen carefully to what my neighbors have to say and see what plans and projects we can organize.

Burning bridges means not turning back no matter what happens.  Our purpose will be to make our neighborhood a better place to live and this will be our mission.  We will consider the wants of our neighbors and investigate how we can make these wants a reality by keeping in mind our definite purpose and having Faith that this reality will come about if we follow the plans that we make.  We will stand by our desire until it becomes a dominating obsession in our lives and finally a fact.  We must focus on our Why and not go back to the old way.  Persistence will be what we need.

We must dream, hope, wish, desire and plan. We must believe we will possess it, we must be a practical dreamer who puts their dream into action, and we must be tolerant and open-minded so we can see an opportunity when it presents itself.  We must kindle in our mind the fire of hope, faith, courage, and tolerance.
