CHAPTER 5: SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, PERSONAL EXPERIENCES OR OBSERVATIONS “The person who stops studying merely because he has finished school is forever hopelessly doomed to mediocrity, no matter what may be his calling. The way of success is the way of continuous pursuit of knowledge.” It was January 1970, Connie and I had only been married 5 months. I made a decision to leave college, where I had been studying for the ministry, to service as the minister for a church in Brookston, Indiana. Little did I know that my real schooling was just getting started. Sure the classes in school were great in the book knowledge. I did know how to do research and write sermons (a little). I could teach class about the Bible story. BUT, here is the rest of the story. I now had to learn specialized knowledge, such as how to better speak publicly. Many of you may not notice, but I have little of accent. So this Southerner had to learn had slow down when speaking, and pronoun words more correctly (which I still have to work on). I still can see Connie sitting in audience (my speech tutor) with her hand signals, telling me when I was talking too loud, too low, or too fast and the one “you talking too long”. She didn’t know about “Stop It” then. Another specialized knowledge I had to work on was the people skills, how to understand them and all of their demands placed on me. I must admit the one specialized knowledge I wish I had back then is, “It’s none of my business what others think of me. My only business is what I think of me!” Oh, where was Michael’s wisdom, then. We are informed in this chapter of two kinds of knowledge, general and specialized. We can read books, takes classes, watch videos, or listen to audios for all kind of general knowledge and not make any money. Hill says that the word educate is derived from the Latin word “educo” meaning to develop from within. It is in knowing how to organize and use knowledge after they are acquired, when it can become specialized knowledge. “The man who can organize and direct a “Master Mind” group of men who possess knowledge useful in the accumulation of money, is just as much a man of education as any man in the group.” Thoughts with a burning desire, strengthen by faith and the repeating of self-talk to our subconscious mind are within our control. As Mr. Hill wrote, “— that we rise to high positions or remain at the bottom BECAUSE OF CONDITIONS WE CAN CONTROL IF WE DESIRE TO CONTROL THEM.” Thank you Michael for helping me to get back my control. I have found with MFF a hope that I have been missing. With the new boot camp, I find a path which I can follow. and a home with those who believe in me and are helping me believe in myself again.
